The Minster is a must see visit when in York. The construction of the Minster began about 1220 and then continued for many years. All of the work now is renovations and there are about 12 resident stone masons replacing and repairing the stonework which has been ravaged over many hundreds of years. Needless to say there are many crafts people working on other parts of the building. At the moment the East End is undergoing major restoration. The Great East Window has been removed for restoration and has been replaced by an almost life size digital photo of it. It is the largest digital photo in the world!

National Railway Museum – this covers a huge area and takes quite some time to see it all. Many of the exhibits are of Royal trains from the past. They certainly didn’t rough it.

On display were some railway posters from the past.
The first one is from where I used to live as a child. The second one will be recognised by friends who read this blog!
At the time of writing 22nd June the weather has been bucketing down for a couple of days and we can’t see an end to it on the forecast. Sunny France next year?
We made a visit to Beningbrough Hall and Gardens, a National Trust property. This 18th century mansion house came to the National Trust after the death of Lady Chesterfield. All the contents had been sold at auction and so the trust has furnished it with collections of period furniture, museum pieces and portraits.
We had a pot of tea (a large one) and a piece of cake at the cafe.
They had a play room and a dressing up area, so I was in my element. More importantly there was part of the National Portrait Gallery on display. We are not sure if they are originals or not. There wasn’t much security around.
